Extended Biography
Nick was born in Dallas, Texas, to hardworking immigrant parents. He graduated in the top ten in his class from Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas, where he was a three-sport varsity letterman. He then graduated from Tulane University in New Orleans with a double major in History and Economics and a minor in Philosophy.
Law School
His experience as a "law office runner" at Lynn, Stodghill, Melsheimer & Tillotson, LLP in Dallas during the summer convinced Mr. Spiliotis to attend law school and become a litigator.
After college, he received his law degree from the University of Texas School of Law in Austin where he served on the Texas Journal of Business Law. After his 1L year, he attended a summer study abroad program on the island of Crete, including taking a class instructed by Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. One evening he danced a traditional Greek dance with "RBG." He credits his law school professor, Philip Durst, with inspiring his deep appreciation for the practice of labor and employment law and the inherent value such laws provide both employers and employees.
Early Career
Right out of law school, Nick received immediate deposition and courtroom experience under the guidance of trial attorney Scott Henderson, an All-American linebacker and member of UT's 1969 and 1970 National Championship teams.
In 2003, after passing a second bar exam, he moved to New York City, where he joined a 1000+ attorney law firm and spent the next three years litigating various cases in state and federal court. In only his third year of practicing law, he won after oral argument a decision before the Supreme Court of New York, Appellate Division, First Department.
Practice in Houston
In 2006, he moved to Houston, where he joined Winstead PC's labor and employment practice group. Since then, Nick has focused exclusively on labor and employment and workplace injury matters, becoming Board Certified in Labor and Employment Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in 2011. Nick has handled hundreds of employment claims on behalf of his clients.
Nick's clients in Houston have included some of the largest energy midstream, oilfield services, construction, and restaurant companies in the country. He spent four years as Of Counsel at Ogletree Deakins, an international labor and employment boutique law firm, and the past ten years as a Partner leading the labor and employment practice in Houston for global full-service law firm K&L Gates LLP and super regional firm Jones Walker LLP.
Nick is also an avid outdoorsman. In 2019, he was one of four nominees presented by Texas Governor Greg Abbott to US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross for consideration to fill Texas' obligatory seat on the Gulf of Mexico (now America) Fishery Management Council.
In his free time, Nick loves spending time with his children and playing sports. While at Tulane, he made the school's Division 1-A football team as a walk-on at strong safety. Today, he stays young at heart by playing soccer in the Houston Football Association's over-30 and over-40 premier soccer leagues, where he has declared himself one of the league's most prolific strikers with over 200 goals.
